Eritrea: 20 years of independence, but still no freedom
Amnesty International
Journalists, politicians and members of religious groups make up some of the thousands of prisoners languishing in Eritrea’s secret network of prisons, detained for simply expressing their opinion, practicing their religion or trying to flee the repression in their country. Many have been detained without charge for over a decade – some for nearly 20 years – and none have been charged with a crime or brought before a court. Many prisoners are believed to have died as a result of torture and other ill-treatment. The government refuses to confirm or deny these reports, leaving families unaware of the fate of their loved ones.
