Madrid - A group of some 300 Syrian refugees was refused entry to the Spanish enclave of Melilla in Moroccan territory by police and the Guardia Civil on Friday.

Many were screaming 'freedom and Madrid'.
Officers closed the Beni-Enzar border crossing and had to confront the refugees for several hours. The Syrians had fled the civil war in Syria and, after crossing North Africa, wanted to enter Spanish territory to seek political asylum. Spanish security forces were alerted by their Moroccan counterparts.
